Dr. Duncan serves both the Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard Communities, and travels regularly to Florida to her satellite clinic in Pensacola. Dr. Duncan is a 5 generation physician, and was the youngest Certified Surgical Assistant in Washington State at age 15 to her father. Dr. Duncan enjoys playing polo, having marked her time previously in the horse world as a farrier and blacksmith in her 20's, and is delighted to be finally competing in the sport. Dr Duncan is also a professional artist and has had solo and group shows in sculpture and painting; and has danced professionally in 2 Folkloric Dance Companies. She is presently working on a series of polo paintings in her study of the particular movements and strategies. She also holds a Master’s degree in Comparative Sociology with emphasis on Cognitive Movement from Florida International University, and a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Amherst College. Dr Duncan attended Sedro Woolley High School and Phillips Academy Andover, and earned her medical degree from the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, Florida. Dr. Duncan originally grew up in Washington State and San Diego, spending her summers in Ketchikan, Alaska where her father also had a second medical practice.
Physiatry, Greek for ‘the art of healing,’ is a specialty that began in 1937 at the Mayo Clinic to train physicians to handle the complex neurological, psychological and musculoskeletal issues involved with rehabilitating a patient from combat and disease injuries. Physiatrists diagnose and manage injury, with the goal of maximizing function for the individual patient. This specialty addresses acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders and pain, neurological conditions involving central and peripheral nervous systems, and rehabilitation of impairments associated with disabilities in adults and children. Dr. Duncan offers joint and trigger point injections, manual medicine, nerve conduction studies and a rehabilitation program that addresses biomechanics such as postural strengthening, gait evaluation and stress reduction exercises.
Dr. Duncan has published research in the Journal of Youth and Adolescent Medicine, SPINE - Journal of Neurosurgery, and the Journal of Medical Primatology. She was a Research Associate at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis prior to undergoing her medical training at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. Dr Duncan carries on the family tradition of frontier medicine and travels frequently to medical relief trips in Haiti, Honduras, Hawaii and Mexico. Dr Duncan is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Academy of Orthopedic Medicine and is Board Certified in Physiatry. She hold full licenses in the states of Massachusetts and Florida. Dr Duncan is an avid horsewoman and learning how to farm, and enjoys swimming, running and squash for recreation.
