Physiatry, Greek for ‘the art of healing,’ is a specialty that began in 1937 at the Mayo Clinic to train physicians to handle the complex neurological, psychological and musculoskeletal issues involved with rehabilitating a patient from combat and disease injuries. Physiatrists diagnose and manage injury, with the goal of maximizing function for the individual patient. This specialty addresses acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders and pain, neurological conditions involving central and peripheral nervous systems, and rehabilitation of impairments associated with disabilities in adults and children.
